Kernel-3.11-rc7 kms init causes system hang during boot with cape verde gpu. Only me?
Slackware64 14.
Kernel-3.11-rc7 with kernel mode setting (kms) on my radeon hd 7750 causes system hang, during boot when kms initializes.
Disabled kms (nomodeset) and system boots fine. Got warning about UMS not available so I re-built kernel with UMS but that changed nothing (regarding system hang with kms).

This is normal, for newer cards the radeon driver doesn't support UMS at all, so KMS is the only option.
The hang is a bug The only thing I can suggest at the moment is report it.
Upgraded to stable 3.11. Same problem! Looks like bug isn't resolved so I'll have to report it like you say, and drop back to 3.10.9.
They've been promoting hot new dpm features in 3.11 for these new GPU's, but you can't even use the open source driver which needs kms; lol. Need open source drivers for custom modesettings and other stuff.

EDIT-UPDATED-SOLVED:
Updated firmware to current and now it works! Added radeon.dpm=1 to kernel options too. Appears myself was borked. Guess it is important to keep firmware as current as the kernel (or even more updated).
Slackware current, kernel 3.11 with Radeon HD 5700 Series: 30 seconds hiccup at boot/kms. Upgrading kernel-firmware from 20130705git to 20130912git (created by running source/a/kernel-firmware/kernel-firmware.SlackBuild) resolved the problem.
Sheesh, that's not even a big gap (about two months?). Didn't think upgrading firmware was such a big deal (thought it only provided basic hardware access to modules), and your GPU has been available for quite a while. Updating firmware appears obviously more important than I had imagined.

Actually, it usually isn't a very big deal, but 3.10 and 3.11 have big features dropped (UVD and DPM respectively), and these require new firmware files.
