Kernel 2.6.37 blanks screen permanently

I built kernel 2.6.37. When the i915 driver loads and switches into 48x170 mode the screen goes blank; nothing unblanks it, not even loading X. Everything else works. Log files show no difference between that and booting into kernel 2.6.36. I run Slackware, updated daily, on an eMachines E725 laptop.

You need fbcon builtin (or loaded as a module), or disable modesetting (from grub commandline (I think) : i915.modeset=0 )

fbcon is built in. Others have reported the same problem with the Intel video drivers in the kernel's bugzilla, beginning with an intermediate version of 2.6.36 and continuing into 2.6.37.

/sbin/setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00

which I put at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.modules , solves the problem for me and others.
