Exclamation Kernel 2.6.21.5 *noobz

I have been trying too install the latest stable kernel and every time i fail, so i need some help pls.

200GB hd but i have created a logical disk (my backup drive) i want to be able to use my windows and linux

hda3 is my linux-swap
hda4 is my linux-ext3

The furthest ive got with installing the kernel was configuring it in the menu.lst (CRUB not lilo) i replaced the default kernel 2.6.17.11 with 2.6.21.5, but for the initrd it didnt compile such thing so i didnt use any initrd.

initrd 2.6.17.11.img

The commands i typed for the compile

which should i use Full or patch ?

wget http://www2.kernel.org/pub/linux/ker...6.21.5.tar.bz2
tar jxf linux-2.6.21.5.tar.bz2
cd linux-2.6.21.5

make -s menuconfig
(in here i allowed NTFS write other things are beyond me)

make -s && make -s modules_install install

after finished i edited the GRUB menu.lst (like i said above)

title kernel 2.6.21.5
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.21.5 root=/dev/hda4 ro
savedefault

thanks maly

Changing only that single option will not work, IMO. I have tried that once and the options do not produce a kernel booting on most machines. You have two options. Either check them all or take the .config file from your current kernel (you may need to install kernel-source package) and copy it to the new sources. In general it should work much better that way.

Lightbulb

Now i have another problem when i installed the kernel on SimplyMEPIS (latest version) it booted into the system but didnt have no internet connection and didnt detect my Realtek audio it couldnt find a mixer so it said. I used the tutorial from MEPIS documentation which i followed exactly

Any moderators do you think you could create seperate announcements on the page->Linux Kernel

Tutorials on how to make the 2.6.21.5 kernel for the public types of LinuxOS most linux just copy from each other anyways, so it should be fairly easy and it will stop alot of noobs from asking the same questions.

When you have time of course.

much appreciated Maly
