Kernel 2.4

Why is 2.4 still being used and developed? I understand that some people get hooked into version if they have non-portable software stacks in house, but is there some better reason? Is 2.4 better for anyone from a technical standpoint in certain applications?

I think 2.6 is quite a bit bigger (and this refers to the compiled kernel, not the source, although this also is a lot bigger) than 2.4. Thus, from what I have read, 2.4 seems to be quite popular in the embedded sector.

My guess: An increasing number of operating systems offer long term support, where they promise bug fixes but no major enhancements for a number of years. It could be that they are generating enough patches downstream to justify continued 2.4 development.
