My system is Linux 2.6.9-78

Note to self:

Always leave a spare kernel in grub/lilo. 2.6.9-78 is a weird kernel version.

It looks like a crash, and a dud kernel. Try another, if you have it or boot from the install cd and install one.

i didn't get proper solution for this problem. why this kernel panic error came and the system got hung .can anyone help me to troubleshoot this issue

If the system was working fine and it then suddenly started crashing like this, then its probably a hardware error - I'd start by looking at the memory, next the main-board.

With some file systems (esp Reiserfs) a lot of corruption can cause panics, so you may need to run a full check & repair.

A bit more back-ground to the issue would be useful - like when did it occur - "my car's not working" is never enough to diagnose an auto-problem - the same is true of computer issues. As much of the history & circumstances of the error is helpful

If you just installed a new kernel - then, as business_kid suggested - reinstall the last "known good kernel" and move on.

If you have any reason to suspect hardware, then check your RAM, try swapping components, etc.
