Installing Kernel sources

Hi there. I'm trying to get a driver installed for a USB modem, and it keeps telling me "Kernel sources not found!" when I run the configuration for the driver install.

I'm using Debian, and I installed the package "Kernel-source-2.4.27" after using uname to find out what my kernel was. This didn't resolve the problem. After uncovering some (possibly unrelated) documentation on kernel recompiling, I tried extracting the tar file at /usr/src, but this also didn't have any effect.

Any help would be appreciated guys, I know I'm a n00b and probably shouldn't bein ther kernel section, but I figured it didn't fit anywhere else!

Did you also make a symlink from /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4 (debian looks for the kernel source at /usr/src/linux)? Not sure, but you also might have to copy your config file in /boot to /usr/src/linux/.config and then run make oldconfig.

The other thing you can usually do for drivers is just aptitude install kernel-headers-2.4.27.

OK, actually found out that the problem was that Debian wasn't supported, and that for Debian there was a seperate set of tools!

Still, I just recompiled my first kernel, which is an experience worth having, I guess! And remarkably, without breaking anything!

Thanks dude :-)
