initramfs ..problem detecting file system

hi,
I wanted to patch kernel 2.6.26.2 with xenomai 2.4.5 and compile it.
I downloaded sources and patched xenoami with 2.6.26.2.
I used the configuration file which was supplied to me and I was
strictly instructed to use only that .config file(I attached
that file...) as it is minimal ...
I compiled the kernel( as per debian ..I am using debian OS ubuntu 9.04 desktop edition) and manually edited the menu.lst file...
while booting on that kernel..it gives an alert message
ALERT!! (some message)..and I got initramfs command prompt
I changed root=/dev/sda$(num 1-8)..but the same is continued ...
It says waiting for file system...later after some time ..it gives an error message...couldn't find...then initramfs
How to solve this problem?

Probably your initramfs has some wrong information in it.
Try to search how to rebuild the initrd image on your distro.
THis will probably solve it.

I hope you have another kernel that still boots
