Hyperthread server goes to kernel panic with SMP kernic, boots ok with non SMP kernel

Server with hyperthreaded processor goes to kernel panic with SMP kernic, boots ok with non SMP kernel.

What could be causing this?

Thanks in advance.

For our installs we typically turn off hyperthreading in the BIOS. Once that is done you only need SMP kernel if you have more than one processor. I gather from past reading that hyperthreading isn't really supported well in Linux and there was question as to its value in any event.
