How to add driver support to a kernel

Please point me to info how to add a driver support to a new kernel. I have HP Proliant ML150 server with embedded SATA HostRaid HD adaptor; HP support only Suse Linux ES 9.0 SP3. With more recent kernel updates the driver is not supported. How does one either builds or adds bootable driver module to a new kernel?
Thanks!

Question driver update

Thanks!
I'll give it a try.
Any other ways to do it by hand, e.g. changing boot options to load the driver dynamically, recompile the kernel, etc.?
