assuming you're using grub, edit /boot/grub/grub.conf the changes take effect without having to do anything else. if you're not familiar with editing files on console, try using nano or pico, as they are very simple and friendly. of course, you *should* learn vi...

Define what you mean by "kernel prompt".

If you are using Suse it's better to go through YaST. It's a bit more difficult to edit through an editor.

i use the linux rescue mode but when i try to use the command

: vi /grub/grub.conf

it show vi command not fount(not recognized)

that's because that's the wrong command. no one at all gave you that command to run...
