Filesystem-Related Kernel Panic

I'm trying to compile a small, bare kernel, but it seems I've screwed something up along the way and the kernel goes kablooie...

Code:
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root on unknown-block (8, 1)
Some additional info:
Kernel: 2.6.21.5
EXT3 Support: Compiled in

I think the key part might be the empty section after "tried:", since EXT3 is compiled in and it should have at least tried that filesystem.

What are the parameters you are passing into the kernel when you attempt to boot? Typically after "tried:" you should see something like /dev/hda1.

*sigh*

I think I finally found the problem. When I was configuring the kernel options, I had removed all SCSI support because the only types of drives I would use on this systems are IDE and SATA. I didn't realize that libata apparently causes SCSI emulation for SATA drives . In any case, I've got a working bare kernel now.
