Errors when make install kernel "cannot get info for device"

Hi, I've installed and kernel and source for my mandriva system...
Quote:
uname -a
Linux GamesBox.GlennsPref.net 2.6.27-tmb-desktop-0.rc5.1mdv #1 SMP Sat Aug 30 07:39:42 EDT 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ GNU/Linux
and when I ran make all && make_modules, it finished without error.

Now switch to root for make install, and I get an error pointing to line 214 of /usr/lib/libDrakX/detect_devices.pm

Here is a snip of the file...
Quote:
my @l;
foreach (all($dev_dir)) {
my ($host, $channel, $id, $lun) = split ':' or log::l("bad entry in $dev_dir: $_"), next;
my $dir = "$dev_dir/$_";

# handle both old and new kernels:
my $node = find { -e $_ } "$dir/block", top(glob_("$dir/block*")), "$dir/tape", top(glob_("$dir/scsi_generic*"));
my ($device) = readlink($node) =~ m!/(?:scsi_(?:generic|tape)|block)/(.*)!;
if (!$device) {
($device) = top(glob_("$node/*")) =~ m!/(?:scsi_(?:generic|tape)|block)/(.*)!;
}
Line 214 warn("cannot get info for device ($_)"), next if !$device;

and the output of make install...
Quote:
[root@GamesBox 2.6.27-tmb-0.rc5.1mdv]# make install
sh /usr/src/2.6.27-tmb-0.rc5.1mdv/arch/x86/boot/install.sh 2.6.27-tmb-desktop-0.rc5.1mdv arch/x86/boot/bzImage System.map "/boot"

hardware issue. not kernel.

For the first time in 10 years, I have relinquished control of the pc to gamedude, where I purchase my hardware, to check the system over.

I have been having quite a few dramas with it since installing the hardware, mobo, graphics, and psu.

So, I don expect a reply here.

Thank you

Yes I know, I am using mandriva cooker which is equivalent to "testing or unstable".

There is good news, that kernel is working really well on this dfi-lanparty nForce3 board.

Thanks for the response.

You're absolutely right, It must be a mandriva version number. Confusing?

The do the same with kde, for example I am running 4.1.1, my nephew works for the qt mob and he said he didn't realise they had a new version out. (of course they don't)

Hi, I think it is close to release, and is stable on my system.

My problem seemed to be a mounting post beneath the main board shorting.

It cost me $120 to find out, I had left it there by mistake when installing the new hardware.

But since then I have had no problems with it.

glenn@GamesBox:~/bin$ uname -a
Linux GamesBox.GlennsPref.net 2.6.28-desktop-0.rc8.1mnb #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 28 12:03:15 EST 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ GNU/Linux

I never did find out what that error meant.

regards, Glenn
