Difficult install (no bootable devices outside of hd)

So I have an older laptop I am trying to install the latest version of backtrack on, but after trying all forms of media I resorted to installing it on the hard drive via another machine connected as an external. When I boot up the OS on the old computer however X is somewhat trashed. So I was wondering if there is anyway to go about rebuilding this from within the command prompt

Thanks, James

So I ran a xorg.conf auto reconfigure. Any other tips? do you need anymore info? Is this in the right section?
