CueCat with HIDBP vs. generic USB interface

I just got a USB CueCat. It's great. We don't need the LHC because I've created my own Big Bang of Nerd sitting here scanning books and giggling. However:

It isn't working with my linux (Slackware 12.0, custom 2.6.26 kernel) laptop. The 'cat powers up and then goes to sleep after a minute as expected, but I am not seeing any text when I scan. (Works fine under Windows). According to http://http://progear.sourceforge.ne...ear/node8.html, section 6.3.6, the CueCat requires the HID Boot Protocol (hidbp) drivers rather than the preferred generic USB HID driver. The information in the kernel config text is grimly against using the hidbp drivers but the author of that page claimed no problems.

Is anyone using a USB cuecat under a recent kernel? What, if anything, did you have to do to get it to work?

Does anyone know why the HIDBP driver (usbkbd.o) is evil? What problems am I facing if I choose to use it instead of the more general hid driver?

Any help or further advice is much appreciated.

thanks----

I bought a CueCat and when I went to register the cat, it says the company is out of business. Any ideas? I bought from a reseller on Amazon.

Thank you

Sharon
