confiuration files config-2.6.20.4-1/config-2.6.18

I want to install kernel version linux-2.6.20.4.
I am having two configuration files:
config-2.6.20.4-1_with_nfs_root
config-2.6.18
I tried two of these files
but one gives optimized booting and other doesn't
config-2.6.20.4-1_with_nfs_root boots directly from
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb
but the other one needs both,
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.img &
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb

Both do work but second doesn't give optimized boooting!! why??

I'm not certain what you mean by optimized booting. The config files are the settings used to compile that kernel. They are used for booting. The two config files that you mentioned are for two different kernels (and kernel versions).

i downloaded kernel 2.6.20.4 and replaced .config file contents with config-2.6.20.4-1_with_nfs_root. I was actually trying to install linux image into Accesspoint/client wireless device. when i used above mentioned configuration, the device boots from
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb

next i tried to do same with the config-2.6.18 configuration file. but now the device boots from
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.img
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb

how know that it needs the above two ....is when i uncomment the initrd line in grub.menulist i get an error kernel sync problem.

when i configure the first file also i see the
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.img
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb

files, but i uncommented the initrd line and still it works fine!!
i couldn't do the same thing with config-2.6.18 file

One kernel may have been compiled with all of the drivers needed to boot built in, and there may have been no drivers in the initrd module. Simply copying the .config file won't do anything unless you use it to recompile the kernel and make a new intrd file.
