configure to use in a live cd

Hello;
i am building a live cd, using lfs, althought this question is more kernel specific than lfs.
i want to compile the kernel, the system will be exclusively a live cd. and i need to have support for all network cards that may come along and of course keyboard, and mice as well as screens. are there specific options that the kernel should have to be in a live cd? like ram disk support?
how to make sure all network cards are supported? per instance, the current kernel of knoppix doesn't support my toshiba satellite nic. as it seems not to be a 10/100 but a 1000.
for screens, using vesa will make them work in every case?
thank you very much for your input.
mario
