compiling a generic kernel

How can a generic kernel be compiled that does a probe of hardware

I have compiled kernels usually but without changing Change the .bash_profile

but in case as per the instructions given here
http://linuxfromscratch.org/pipermai...ry/026055.html

I would need a generic kernel and initrd so that I can replace them with the vmlinuz and initrd on installation media with appropriate drivers I have the question I am asking is not limited to the LFS system rather I am asking it in a general context as how do vendors compile the kernel that is shipped on the installation media with latest drivers .

Go have a look It's open source. Download a debian kernel source package for instance and look at their .config file.

Go to http://packages.debian.org . Try searching 'kernel source package'. Learn that Debian package search is broken today and find http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl...h08s06.html.en . It links to a more extensive Debian kernel guide also.
