Apply patches to kernel


Hi,

I wanted to know how to apply patches to the running kernel. Can i download from kernel.org and apply them to RHEL versions.??/

First, patches from kernel.org are not to be applied to running kernel, they should be applied to kernel source code before you build your kernel out of it (and then load it during next boot). You can try to apply patches from kernel.org to RHEL source RPMS, but you have zero chance of getting good results. The reason is the fact that RH sometimes apply patches that are not yet in mainline, or makes its own changes. They are usually enough to both ruin application of a patch and compilation even if you manage to apply it.
