ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/.... does not exist. Dr. opping to a shell

After compiling my new kernel (i tried both 2.4.4 and 3.5-rc) and I try to boot my kernel I got the error in the subject:

Quote:

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/5a86a3b5-3bb8-461c-b60f-0b89753d3b78 does not exist. Dropping to shell
This happens only to my new kernel (the old 3.2 boots ). I tried recompiling with more scsi and ata options but no luck. I guess there is some module i need that i missed to check, but i am not sure what.

This is the output of:

I read the most similar topics and i tried adding the rootdelay= to the grub.cfg and changing the uuid to sda2 but it does not help. I need some more advice. Thank you

Unless I just need more coffee I don't see the entry for the 2.6 Kernel in grub. If one works and one doews not are the entries different ?

BEaSTFX 07-07-2012 03:04 PM

My mistake i meant to say the 3.2 generic kernel not the 2.6.

I see that in the proc modules there isnt ext4 loaded but i checked it in the building of the kernel.

Here is the blkid also

If you built ext4 support as a module, then did that module get included in your initrd when you installed the kernel? Lacking that, the kernel won't be able to mount the root file system.

BEaSTFX 07-08-2012 03:09 AM

I added ext4dev to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and then updated the initramfs. Can you tell me what else I should of done?

Not very specific.

What did you change, and what messages did you get ? - in detail.

Personally on my custom kernels I never use initrd - and I am less than enamoured with uuid/label for boot parameters. But that's probably just me being old and crusty.

BEaSTFX 07-08-2012 03:59 AM

@syg00

I tried to change it to see if it boots without UUID and I just got the same error but with sda2

ALERT! /dev/sda2 does not exist. Dropping to shell
Do you have any suggestions how to fix this error?

bsat 07-08-2012 11:32 PM

Did you enable CONFIG_EXT4 in the .config ?

syg00 07-09-2012 07:32 PM

As suspected, that ALERT! message is coming from the initrd (on the Oneriic system I have to look at). Start by looking there.
