2.6.16.6 released

I notice there have been a lot of patches over the last week. I tend to keep up as much as I can for fun, but just about need to compile every day at the moment for that :) Of course it only takes about 5 minutes on the A64 these days.

And then 2.6.16.7 a couple of hours later (one patch)

Lucky! :)

Peace...

It takes me 45 minutes using my config.

So as a result i only upgrade when i actually need to upgrade, or if i will actually notice a change. (The new hal needs 2.6.15+, so i upgraded).

Just by diagnosing the problem based on the very little information you provided, it's most likely related to Nvidia drivers. You will need to install the absolute LATEST nvidia drivers in order for it to work with 2.6.16.

Or you could just stay with 2.6.11.

A footnote:

liquidtenmilion,

I do not comprehend where did you pick up the wording "the absolute LATEST nvidia drivers in order for it to work with 2.6.16". For instance, 1.0-8178 works just fine, hence there is no necessary need to go with the 1.0-8762. Actually a lot of people have had more problems with the latest drivers released on May 22 2006 than with the earlier ones.

liquidtenmilion 05-22-2006 03:20 PM

No, on an unpatched vanilla 2.6.16.16, nvidia 8178 will not even compile. The only way to use those nvidia drivers is to use the patches available on the nvidia forum. Your distro might supply those patches by default, or the kernel might be patched.

But vanilla nvidia drivers will not compile against vanilla 2.6.16.16. Only 8762 drivers will.

You are RIGHT!
This morning I updated my FC4 kernel to "2.6.16-1.2111_FC4",but after that I can't startx! I think the point is nvidia-driver,so use
"yum install kernel-module-nvidia-2.6.16-1.2111_FC4" to update my video-card driver. Then every thing went well!!
