Zotac and Gigabyte cards any good?

Hi,

My local shop has mostly Zotac and Gigabye video cards.

The ones in my price range are the nVidia GeForce 9500GT 512MB DDR3, the same thing with DDR2 memory, and Gigabye GeForce 9500GT 512MB DDR2 or DDR3.

First of all are these cards any good?

Is the DDR3 worth paying extra for and is the 9500GT a good card?

Does anyone happen to know if this will work with drm on FreeBSD (my Intel G33 chipset isn't supported by 7.1 RELEASE although somebody said it is supported in CURRENT.)

Also does it work with Solaris x86? I checked the HCL and there are many nVidia cards listed but not these. However, everybody says the Solaris HCL is not up to date...

The card is for use with Linux, FreeBSD, or Solaris on a Core 2 Duo box with 4G RAM and a 22 inch screen that can only do 1680x1050. I'm not a gamer, but I would like good graphics. My G33 chipset does an ok job on everything but Solaris now, which doesn't recognize it. I only got 1200x1024 on Solaris.

The shop has a Zotac GeForce 6200 256M for about half the price but I didn't see any good reviews for it. However, it is on Solaris's HCL.

Thanks,

Rand

It depends on the price. If nvidia 9000 series is too expensive, then just get an 8000 or 7000 series card. I would only recommend the latest cards if you want to play the latest games. Not even I play the latest games, and I am a gamer, and I have an 8800 GTS.

Hi, good to see Slackers helping Slackers!

Thanks for your info. I got a different mobo than I was expecting. I have this mobo in my Slackware box and it has onboard GeForce 7100 which works great. If this card will work with Solaris than I should be fine. Thanks.

Well I know nvidia has solaris drivers available here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

But, it looks like they support only:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/solaris_supported.html

I don't know too much about solaris, I've only used it once.
