xsane stopped working with Epson Perfection 1650 after earlier success

I've been using my Epson Perfection 1650 usb scanner with xsane for over a year, without problems.
I follow Debian Sid (unstable). After a recent upgrade of xsane to 0.97 the scanner no longer works.

In detail: The first time I run xsane it detects the scanner and runs as normal (apparently). Having completed the scan, however, it hangs and no picture appears. After that I can no longer access the scanner and sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L say there is no scanner. However, if I power off and on it comes back as before.

What is odd is that I have a virtually identical setup on my laptop and this does work with the scanner.

Contents of /etc/sane.d/epson.conf:
--------------------------
# epson.conf
#
# here are some examples for how to configure the EPSON backend
#
# SCSI scanner:
# scsi EPSON
#
# Parallel port scanner:
#pio 0x278
#pio 0x378
#pio 0x3BC
#
# USB scanner - only enable this if you have an EPSON scanner. It could
# otherwise block your non-EPSON scanner from being
# recognized.
# Depending on your distribution, you may need either the
# first or the second entry.
usb
#usb /dev/usbscanner0
usb /dev/usb/scanner0
usb 0x4b8 0x110

Note: I've tried running as root but it makes no difference. Vuescan also fails.

I have an Epson Stylux CX5400 that works fine.
The only line in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf that isn't blocked is usb 0x*** *x***
The last line in you /etc/sane.d/epson.conf
Try and see if this will work for you.
I have no idea if it will or not.

No luck I'm afraid. I'm really beginning to wonder if this is a hardware problem of some kind. I reverted to the previous version of xsane, with the same result. But it's very odd that the scanner does work with my laptop, with exactly the same configuration as far as I can see.

Google shows some people with similar sorts of problem but no obvious solution that I can see.

Okay, I'm not sure how I did this but I'll try.

I had the same problem as you some time ago.
I could use the scanner once but not again.
If I wanted to use it a second time I had to reboot.

At www.xsane.org (i think that's right) I found a LINK that delt with the problem.
I had to use a command if I wanted to use it over and over without rebooting.
I have no idea what the command was.

My first post was as 'joeyd' because I had a password problem using 'd1l2w3'.

I can't even use it once! It hangs after scanning the image.
But I'll have a look at the link you give. Thanks.

Please post what 'sane-find-scanner' says and /etc/sane.d/epson.conf

That is not the right link.
I'll try and find it later and let you know.

Problem now solved. There was a bug in libusb. The latest version now in Debian Sid (Testing) makes things work again.
