REMOVED PACKAGES:

I just wanted to thank you so much for posting this - I simply could not get this card to work under 8.1 whether i configured X by hand or used the Nvidia drivers or any of the other dozen solutions I found on line.
When I saw this I checked my nvidia-180 modules and sure enough they were 180.11. I removed them, reran the Nvidia drivers script as you describe, rebooted and suddenly I have a screen with resolution!
It was definitely the 180.11 packages in my case which were the problem as I did have the sources present and everything else needed. In fact with this bit of knowledge it because a fantastically easy install for custom drivers.
I haven't tried out specifically 3D stuff with this card yet so I'll look into that next.
