xmms or gtcd crash, music continues playing. rh7.2

got gtcd to play audio cds on my old PC, now with linux (Red Hat 7.2 ,64 MB RAM).
However, at some random time the program crashes
but the music continues to play until the CD finishes.
The gtcd console is then dead. I can xkill it but I cannot kill the process.
With ps -e or ps aux I do not see other processes after gtcd
(exept for ps), the tty is ?.
At that point I need to reboot the PC to be able to use the cdrom again.

With xmms I can play .mp3 fine (so far) but with .wavs it jumps
from one song to the next, probably not enough cache or memory somehow.
And then, it also looses control of the cdrom, and I need to reboot as well.
With xmms at least I can see which plugins are used. Not so with gtcd,
but I guess it is something like a front-end.
gtcd also tries to get the cd database from, which it cannot,
but that should not be a problem.

Is there a way to arrange this problem without rebooting every time?

Im old to linux/Unix as a user, but new to installing my own PC.
thanx in advance,
