XFree86 Version/Driver conflict

I'm trying to install the latest ATI graphics drivers for my video card (Radeon 9200SE) so I can play graphically enhanced games. However, the driver downloads only go upt XFree86 4.3, and I'm using version 4.4. Is there a way to get around this so it lets me install the updated drivers?

I remember reading a thread about this. The answer, unfortunately, is 'no'. You have to downgrade.

I read a guy on the Yoper forums say he tricked it into thinking it was compatible, but he didn't post how to do it or what file to edit or anything. :\
