Question XFree problems: atimisc_drv.o is unresolved!

Ok, this is my second Gentoo install on the same machine/hardware. The first time through, I had no problem whatsoever installing, configuring, and running X. Now however, I do.

When I startx my screen flashes to black and my monitor status light (usually green) flicks to orange. The final line (and only one appearing to be out of the ordinary) appearing in the console after I ctrl+alt+backspace is:
Code:
 /path/to/atimisc_drv.o is unresolved!
My video card is an ati 3d rage lt pro.

Here's what I think the problem may be.

I accidentally compiled xfree with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" and got a pre-release version 4.3.0.1. Later realizing that this (a possibly buggy pre-release) might be the reason for my error, I emerged the latest release, 4.3.0-r4. However, the command line blurb I receive after ctrl+alt+backspaceing is obviously launching 4.3.0.1. So, how can I stop this from happening?

Secondly, my /var/log/XFree86.0.log is full of crap regarding screenresolutions that do not work for various reasons, including problems with memory, vrefresh, and sync.

Anything you can suggest would be greatly appreciated, I know this hardware works fine with X, so its definatley possible.

Thanks,
Cam

Would anyone mind telling me how to unmerge XFree86 4.3.0.1? I did emerge -C xfree and it unmerged v.4.3.0-r4, and I thought it also emerged 4.3.0.1, as startx was a "command not found." Still, when I emerged xfree 4.3.0-r5 and typed startx (after doing xf86config of course) the message in the console still talks about a "pre-release" version of xfree.

Thanks,
Cam

Sorry to be impatient, but I'd just like to bump this and see if anyone has any ideas that might help my predicament.

I tried the cvs version of x, and that gave me much more errors. I'm now re-emerging 4.3.0-r5, and as soon as that is up and running, I will be, no doubt, doing everything in my power to configure it correctly.

I would be happy to post and files/logs you wish.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Cam

Ok, once again being an impatient whiny little tool, I must self bump because I'd like to think that somewhere out there someone might have an idea that could help me, or be able to direct me somewhere I could be helped.

I am now running XFree86 4.3.0-r5 which compile perfectly. With various config files I get these errors:

1 - no screens found
2 - screens found, none with a useable configuration
3 - aforementioned "XFree86setDDCproperties path/to/atimisc_drv.o is unresolved!"

This hardware used to work with X, what can I do?

Thanks a bunch!
Cam
