xf86config woes -- display won't change

We just installed slackware 9.0 on an old HP Pavilion 6350. Installation was successful and now we are attempting to configure the monitor, but no matter what settings we put in when xf86config is run, the picture is always huge and won't fit on the screen, rendering it useless. Its an aoc spectrum 7vlr monitor and the computer has a diamond stealth vram graphics card, not itegrated with the mobo. We've tried putting in the minimum screen size of 1024x768 but no avail. Any ideas? TIA!

What refresh rates do you have it set to? Check to make sure that you're within the proper boundaries, also what size is the AOC?

The info I found online onthe monitor gave me hsync at 30-85 and vsync at 50-130. I've tried tons of combinations, and I always get the exact same result, only the bottom half of the screen is used, and pretty much the kde start logo in the bottom left corner takes up the whole screen thats turned. The screen of the monitor is 15". Thanks!
