XF86-video-intel driver problem

hi,
i have 2 monitors at a Fujitsu siemens amilo pro laptop.
One is laptops monitor with a 1280*800 resolution, the other is external big monitor 1680*1050 resolution.

My big monitor only shows 1280*800 screen resolution and i dont know how to obtain 1680*1050 .

Someone adviced me to install xf86-video-intel driver.

i download it and libdrm from intellinuxgraphics.org .

but i need to compile it i think.

./configure for libdrm resulted with the following error.

checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: in `/home/imo/Desktop/libdrm-2.4.17':
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

apt-get install gcc

resulted with the following

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gcc is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
linux-libc-dev
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

How can i solve this problem?
How can i have a 1680*1050 external monitor?

I use Debian Lenny.
VGA is Intel Mobile GM945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.

hi,
i tried to install following
- autoconf
- automake
- libtool
- hwdata (for PCI IDs)
- xorg-x11-server-Xorg >= 1.3.0.0-6
- xorg-x11-server-sdk >= 1.3.0.0-6
- libXvMC-devel
- mesa-libGL-devel >= 6.5-9
- libdrm-devel >= 2.0-1

(libtool and xorg-x11-server-Xorg and xorg-x11-server-sdk did not installed)

i went to libdrm directory and

./configure
command resulted the following error.

checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: in `/home/imo/Desktop/libdrm-2.4.17':
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

./autogen gave the following error
bash: ./autogen: No such file or directory

I know that linux is not a good system for desktop usage but dual monitor is a very simple thing that an OS should handle.
How can i increase resolution?

i appreciate for answers.

RE

I have the same problem explain above, a system update got rid of my proper xorg driver. I also have the 845G. I tried to add the "xaa" option. it helped me access a normal 1024x768 resolution, but the screen is all black. I cannot see one thing.

any idea what else could be wrong?

I tried using various xorg.conf config, it is the best I got. I wish I could simply downgrade
