X will not run in Mandrake 9.1

Downloaded MAndrake 9.1 and md5 summed twice. Clean copy.

System is a Giga Byte 8KNXP motherboard with a P4 3GHx. 2GB RAM.

Video is a pair of Silicon Graphics 1600SW flat plate monitors (1600 x 1024 native resolution) driven by a pair of #9 video Revolution 4 cards on PCI. Each card has 32 MB RAM.

With the non standard resolution of themonitors its necessary to edit modelines in XF86Config-4. Have done this. When I try to startX one monitor comes up brilliant white with mottled blue areas in it (dual monitor system). H ave re edited XF86Config-4 several times. With the non standard res forget about XFdrake configging the system .

In the Config file the bindings are as followsDevice1 Monitor 1 Screen1 Device 2 Monitor 2 Screen 2.. When I attempt to run X this way it crashes back to the system console and gives an error message to the effect no screens were found . When both devices (the cards) are on screen 0 X will start with one screen showing the white/blue mottled , no mouse no icons nothing. ctrl+alt+baskspace back to console and get the error message that screen 1 was deleted virtual heighth 0 minimum 128. In exploring the XF86 site the lartest version of XFree supports the SGI monitor and the graphics cards. Im just returning to Linux after a loooong absence (last time under UNIX) so I have forgotten a lot. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Also how do I determine what version of Xserver I have??

Any help would be deeply appreciated.
