Exclamation X-server problems

Hello everyone.

My laptop has trouble closing. It freezes at "Will now halt" and I have to press any key before it shuts off.

I've looked into the system and there is an error message that says: AUDIT: Fri Jan 9 00:43:59 2009: 5355 X: client 4 rejected from local host ( uid=0 gid=0 pid=5536 )

It says 4 times in a row, and I think that is the reason why the laptop will not shut down properly.

How do I fix it?

My laptop is a HP dv6645eo. I am running with Nvidia driver 173, since 177 is that I can not put the laptop on standby.
I run with Ubuntu 8.10.

I just found out that it only happens when Powernowd-daemon is disabled. How do I disable Powernowd while the laptop remains shut down properly?
