Hey, I've converted my roommate and another friend. And my gf is so completely fed up with XP she is switching during our reading week (XP + PII laptop = slow). I downloaded and helped them install Fedora Core. I have some problems though. They both have compaq, with built-in Via s3 ProSavage 8 KM266 (i think that is the name). RedHat only detects a KM133, which doesn't work. So I just used the vesa driver for now, but I can't find a driver for this video card anywhere. Vesa is not acceptable, it's too slow to even play dvds smoothly on their computers. A ProSavage is by no means a very decent card, but a proper driver would help speed things up considerably. I saw some fix on the net, but it said it only supported up to 800x600, and that is just to small of a resolution.
I'm also a redhat/fedora newbie. I've only used slackware for the past few years. So I have another small question or 2.
2) How do I change the hostname? (in slackware its just the /etc/HOSTNAME , but in redhat I was stumped, and it appears to be using the MAC address for their hostname)
3) If an rpm says its an rpm source file, where does it install the source to?
4) I compiled a new kernel for both of them, and Fedora complained how I shouldn't be doing this for security reasons. What's up with that?
I've been loaded w/ midterms, so I haven't spent too much time on the problems, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
In case anyone else has this problem. I downloaded the latest drivers from www.probo.com , they are compile for the beta version of xfree 4.4.0, but they work good. They also have another way to fix by adding a UseBios "no" option to the device section in XF86config. It works perfect now.
Using Red Hat 9 (and of course I suspect other distros), graphical install will not work in default. Running linux lowres as the boot option works, but that's a given. Choosing typical resolutoins such as 1024x768x24 will cause the card to display blackscreen; it is untested in my experience as to wether using the Prosavage drivers provided in RH9's install CD at 640x480 works.
Hope it provides some assistance. I am currently still in process of getting mine up and running, but only because I don't have much time today. Stupid family reunions.
