wvdialconf can't recognize modem

Using slackware 10.2 with kernel 2.6.13, on a hp pavilion zv5120us (zv5100 series) laptop...
I might have skipped a basic thing, I'm not sure. any ideas are very welcome...
I am not sure whether this is a hardware or software issue. as mentioned in a previous thread I sent, kppp and pppd exit with NO CARRIER error after dialing w/ modem and communicating w/ remore modem.
wvdialconf just cannot find my modem.
my default boot option is acpi=noirq to stop laptop from disabling irq 5 (output of irq5 below). I also tried with acpi=off; acpi=off noapic; acpi=off noapic nohotplug. No success, same error.
I am posting some output that I think is somehow relevant. ANY ideas are welcome. I want to see my linux on the internet.
wvdialconf exits after scanning, saying that it could not get serial information from /dev/ttySL0. /dev/ttySL0 is set up by:
#modprobe snd-atiixp-modem
#slmodemd --alsa -c USA modem:1 (which sets up SL0)

please regard following info as "just in case you need more info on my system"
PLEASE let me know if you need more output.
