wrong monitor resolution problem

I am really new to Linux.

Using Redhat 8.0 with SIII 540s gfx card, I changed my resolution to 1280x1240. I logged out and received Out of Sync and the resolution was too high.

Now I cannot log in thru graphical login to change to resolution.

I don't know how to switch to text mode and I don't know how to change the resolution in text mode.

Someone help?

Thanks!

boot CD1
type "linux=rescue" or "rescue" not sure, read the screen
follow the instructions on screen
go to text mode
log in as root
chroot /dev/hda# (put your hda# here)
vi /etc/X11/XF86Config
hit "i"
correct HorizSync & VertRefresh according to your monitor manual
hit ESC, type ":wq"
exit

Hi
Instead of using rescue mode, you can boot your machine
into runlevel 3
Assuming you are using lilo as boot loader,
at boot hit ctrl x , you 'll get a prompt
type; linux runlevel 3 (or whatever labelname instead of linux)
you 'll end up in console, then follow jetblackz's instructions
good luck

-- update; for bypassing grub read this;
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...ng-single.html
but type; runlevel 3 instead of single --
