write access on usb storage device

'm trying to get write access working on my usb smartmedia card reader/writer.

THe problem is that write protect is on.
Here's is what dmesg displays:

Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Vendor: Sandisk Model: ImageMate SDDR09 Rev: 0208
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 76
SCSI device sda: 131072 512-byte hdwr sectors (67 MB)
sda: Write Protect is on
sda: sda1
WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured
USB Mass Storage device found at 3
USB Mass Storage support registered.
UMSDOS 0.86k (compatibility level 0.4, fast msdos)

SO my question is how do i turn write Protect off?

This problem has been plaguing me forever.

assuming it is not intrinsic to Sandisk and /dev/sda1 is mounted:
umount /dev/sda1
and
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/?? - where it was mounted

I'm going through the same problems with a thumbdrive. It shows up similarly in dmesg with write protect on. When I mount it, it says it's write protected, mounting read only.

Check the little write protect switch on your thunbdrive, I was told that Lexar had almost all the first batch returned because they mis labeled the write protect switch. This is assuming you have a "Lexar Thunb Drive" and are not calling another brand of usb flash drive a thunb drive, I see the names get misused a lot
