WMP54GS & problems with some linux versions not accepting the essid in iwconfig

The following distro seems to work right , gentoo , knoppix 3.8.1(note this one says first any/off but seems to be configurable in wavelan configure program anyway) and knoppix older too work but

the following don't seem to let you put anything in the essid name under iwconfig , for them its always on any/off settings
tryed on them iwconfig wlan0 essid name but just seems some kind of error message and does not change the name

slax 5.0.0 (slackware based don't work) and ubuntu 5.04 ,kubuntu those too are debian based like knoppix but they don't seem to work with the wireless net connection I think it has too do with the fact in that knoppix will get you change the iwconfig wlan0 essid name but those don't also unlike gentoo were once you configure the net thought ifconfig it does not work on debian or knoppix based in that one you have too turn on DHCP netcardconfig program that knoppix comes with

also got a question about once you got knoppix installed , how do you configure the bootup kernel to bring the wlan0 up on start up under knoppix 3.8.1 for example
someone repled on gentoo how to do this but knoppix is different so I think it needs different bootup commands etc.. gentoo bootup thing will not work for knoppix needs etc.. please respond on how to configure wlan0 to bootup on knoppix

also if you want or someone knows why those other linux versions don't like tou use iwconfig wlan0 essid name error thing could you respond on that too

did not test redhat fedora

did not test redhat fedora , I don't no if it has problems with ndiswrapper and iwconfig wlan0 essid name thing , because I don't or did not download that linux yet... also because its seems fedora beta 4 download are offline now, files not their anymore

also question on why it defaults to restricted , when in windows linksys does not have this , it just has open and shared option I think

why key restricted, why not key open or shared mode? ( post #4)

wconfig wlan0 key restricted [YOURKEYHERE]
iwconfig wlan0 channel [YOURCHANNELHERE]
iwconfig wlan0 essid [ON/OFF]
dhcpcd wlan0

why key restricted

why not key open

the wireless card & router don't have a restricted mode under the router it has open and one called shared mode under it even thou restricted works I don't think it is the right mode because windows only was also shared & open options under linksys windows software

also thanks for the info on getting gentoo too bootup but could you give me the info on say knoppix to get the wlan0 up on booting up the kernel? I have decided too use it because I don't like any more using gentoo just because I don't like spending all my time compiling apps for linux , when after downloding them , I just what them to install after downloading them etc.. don't really need it to compile them if not needed to do so , just want thing to work without it taking days to get it up, gentoo 2005 was just taking too long to compile with emerge , like the night just to compile kde , I don't like that also its not even the newest kde it was compiling up it takes too long , had no problem installing gentoo , just don't like its compiler any more.
