Well, I have gone through a bunch of threads as well as a ton of websites. It still remains unclear as to how I could get my WUSB11 Ver 2.6 to work on Linux. I didnt want to risk messing anything up on my redhat comp. So I am using Knoppix to try and learn how to get it to work. I Would be grateful if someone gave me step-by-step as well as precise instructions as to how i could get my Linksys WUSB11 Ver 2.6 wireless adapter to work on Knoppix or Redhat.
I looked up the instructions as to how to install the Wireless card. Following the exact instructions i still remained where I am now. I had an error when it asked "Linux Source Directorey [/usr/src/Linux]:" and i just continued. I got an error saying something about a Linux Tree or something. Is there something Im doing wrong?
You haven't got the linux kernel source tree installed, its not part of the default goop in Knoppix as far as I know. Its not part of a typical RedHat install either unless you choose the "package by package" selection, the "kernel development" selection... or... of course its part of the "everything" install. Also, don't let up2date install a new kernel afterwards or you're going to have to compile the modules again. If you've already installed RH, installing the kernel source is just a matter of picking your favorite RPM GUI tool, telling it: "kernel" and letting it handle the 2-3 dependencies.
Are you certain you got the right driver set? Linksys has been shipping the 2.6 with the same info as the 2.5 < which points to the wlan-ng drivers... which have nothing to do with your device as its an atmel:
Well, I dont want to mess anything up when installing the Linux Source Tree. How am I supposed to do this correctly? It would be great if someone posted some instructions that I could use.
Its an RPM, you have a number of package management tools on there that will unpack it into the right directory for you. Don't sweat it, but you do want to use the kernel source tree that comes with RH, they've monkeyed with it quite a bit.
Well I am hitting this same issue but I am gettting past the kernel source and past the make install. I see the driver load but no entry in the dmesg and no eth1/wlan0.
No error messages and neat give me a python error.
Anyone have any suggestions to a better usb or low profile pci card for 801.11b with linux drivers? Oh that is available at best buy? A few that are available at my local Best Buy is MS (yeah right), LinkSys, DLink (Plus models only), NetGear and that is it.
Oddly enough the MS PCI card and pcmcia cards are just prism 2.5 chipsets... and some of the rare few on the market... dunno about the USB, you can check the table listing at the atmel site, I think they're one of them. Linksys is playing silly buggers with chipsets, you'll either get a prism2 or an atmel... as far as USB, PCI card these days is going to be a broadcom, which isn't supported. Dlink is either going to be a prism2 or an atmel, both supported (none of the plus models, they're all acx100, TI , unsupported, sorta... there's a project underway but its still alpha although its getting there), and netgear these days I just don't know, last I heard... still prism2.
Now, what you've got... what is the bit surrounding module load at the end of "dmesg", also, what's the output of /sbin/lsmod?
I don't know a thing about the alternate one, I'm assuming you mean the one linked off of Jean's site. The SF one works... the binary config utility is relatively simple. Its a little bit of a headache to configure, you need your kernel source and you might need to hand edit, /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h, but you'll probably be able to tell from the errors on compile. It shouldn't be that hard.
It just seems like I keep getting the same usb-uchi errors that others have gotten and according to the alt. driver web site that version doesn't suffer from it.
Hi all i am basically having the same trouble that you all are. I bought a WUSB11 Version 2.5 (the prism2 chipset) since it had the drivers for it on the linksys website "http://linksys.com/download/driver.asp?dlid=61&osid=7". But after reading around and just going ahead an trying to install it tells you that you need to configure your kernel for it. So not wanting to go through that hassle i kept looking around for a better answer. During that search i found WUSB11 Version 2.6 drivers (the atmel chipset). So i went out to wal-mart and bought a v2.6 adapter. So after doing the same as the other drivers i found out i need to still recompile my kernel for it. So i'm left with no choice but to recompile. But while searching around i found a website that that pretty much told me some errors and fixes and how to recompile it. So pretty much after going through hell i found heaven.
Note: This is the version 2.6 atmel drivers for Mandrake 9.0
I have no clue if this will work with RedHat or SuSe or what ever (mind you i am still a newbie at linux)... Alright i'll shut up here's the website.
There's a link to the compile help on the driver page but it's not the right link so... I hope this helps you and if anyone would like for me to tell them how i got mine to work email me or just PM me thanks...
There's no need to recompile your whole kernel in order to use either of those drivers. You have to compile the modules themselves, but both driver sets have tried their best to make that as easy as possible, usually to the tune of running one script. Also, with either of them you will have to have your kernel source tree installed... maybe that's what you meant?
Ok I have the interface displaying when I use iwconfig/ifconfig I have managed to set static ip address, link light is blicking but still no connection. I tried pinging via wlan0 and got 100% loss.
Here is what I get from dmesg when I plug in...
hub.c: new USB device 00:10.0-2, assigned address 4
usbdfu.c: Downloading firmware for USB device 4...
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:10.0-2 address 4
After this I have to setup via iwconfig for managed/essid
