Wireless Network with DWL-520+ pci card and DI-614+ router
 

Hello to the world of Linux,

I would just like to say thank you to Suse and the rest of the Linux community for such a wonderful OS. This is the first time I've used Linux, but I'm a quick learner and very computer savy.

Any ways to my proplem, I'm setting up a very old computer (PII 333) with Suse 9.1 personal and I have a D-Link DWL-520+ pci wireless card in it, and I'm trying to connect to my D-Link DI-614+ router. I have not changed anything special with the router, so WEP is not activated, or any kind of MAC identification, so it is wide open for testing purposes.

So here is were I think I'm at, When I installed Suse 9.1 personal it regonized the wirless card right away and as far as I know installed the drivers it needs.

Then I did some messing around in YaST to configure the way that the wireless card connects to the router, if you want complete details of what I changed let me know, because I don't think that is the proplem (although it was for a very long time!!)

Next I learned that I need KWiFi, (well I think I do, I really don't know) So I went looking for it on my Windows Computer and dowloaded

kdenetwork3-wirless.rpm

and tried to install it, then it said it needed

libjack.so.0

so I went and found that and downloaded as the file

jack00.94.0-71.i586.rpm

when I tried to install this one it gave me another file it needed

libsndfile.sol

So again I found this but in a different file,

libsndfile-1.0.7-24.i586.rpm

After I got that it installed fine with no more errors and everything following this worked as well, except now I have a different problem. When I try to launch KWiFi, (It is installed now and I executet it from the suse start bar, then it is under the internet folder), it shows the little icon as If it were loading, but it never does, no matter how long I wair.

So thats the part I'm at now, if anybody can help that would be very much aprecieated, and if you need any more information on what I have done so far, just ask.

Oh one last thing, other then the files mentioned in this thread, I have not installed any kind of updates or changed any other files, so it is a fresh copy of Suse 9.1 personal, with no updates.

I had the same combination as you, bought having read that they should work under Linux. I discovered that the 520+ as I recall comes in about 3 versions. Not all of them seem to be the same chip set. In the end I never got it to work under Linux and gave it to the neighbour who uses Win XP.

I'll post what my chipset is as soon as I find out, but as of now it is still not up and running

Try using the command dmesg to see what's happening with the card. In my case this allowed me to see that my card wasn't loading. Also, if you know the card itself works with linux, but it's not seeing your router - use the text commands!

iwconfig -> shows everything about your current wireless connection. It should tell you what router you're connecting to. If it gives some kind of error about none of your connections supporting wireless that's another clue that the wireless card isn't working.

If it is connecting to your router according to this, then try

ifconfig and see if you're getting an IP address.

You're lucky there's a graphical interface to use for wireless, it's pretty new with the latest KDE so I've done it all with text thus far.
