You will need to know how to install 1 package from testing & not upgrade whole system.
It also comes with bluetooth driver.

Easier to install from backports & it will automatically get updated.

firmware does not work without a driver.
it's the (wifi) driver that loads the firmware.
so both have to be present and compatible with the hardware.
btw, driver = module.
often also "kernel module".
no recompiling necessary, simply telling the kernel that it should load the module is enough.
this usually happens by installing the driver in question.
so, if it doesn't start working immediately, maybe a reboot.

Used backports with no luck.
#apt-get -t jessie-backports install firmware-iwlwifi

Could my kernel need to be compiled?
Any other ideas?

The driver is loaded if using debian-gnome there should be a wireless icon at top of the screen, click on it, find your network. & enter encryption-key.

looks good.
now check your log files in /var/log (i'm sorry i'm not so fluent in debian systems. i don't think it's in Xorg.0.log, so maybe in syslog) for errors/warnings from iwlwifi or mac80211 or cfg80211.
you can grep it thus:

why did you choose that particular log file?
i'm not saying it's wrong, i just wonder why only one and why that particular one.
also, when i said "check your log files", i'd think that entails more than copy-pasting command output here.
what have you done to understand your problem better?
anyhow, it looks like there's something (wlan-related???) happening, and no errors.
but, we need more information. more logfiles. more output.
