WinModem HSP56MR Nightmare

Hi. My big problem is that I can't configure my winmodem under Linux.
My system is a Gericom laptop. This laptop is a Pentium 4 on a SIS 645DX motherboard based. This motherboad includes a winmodem HSP56MR. I've tryed to use PCTel drivers (version 0.9.7-9), but drivers doesn´t compile because I have installed Fedora Core 3 distro (kernel 2.6.9) and PCTel drivers only works on 2.4.x kernel versions. I decided use PCTel drivers because is the driver used by Windows XP on this device.
Reading a lots of posts in this and others linux forums, I downloaded smartlink drivers (version 2.9.10) which people says that it works on 2.6.x kernel versions. I compiled this drivers with no errors: "make" and "make install" is right. The problem becomes when I execute "modprobe slamr" command (always as root, of course). This command don't return shell prompt. I have to open other terminal window and when I type "dmesg" I see some lines similar to that:

"Smartlink driver....taints kernel
Found Modem at AMR0"
...and other similar lines.

If I try to execute "slmodemd" command as root, I get this error similar to:

"Can't setup amr0 device"

Of course, modem doesn't work.

I need configure modem to navigate on my laptop. I can't use external modems because my laptop hasn't serial ports at all.

Thank you. I'm waiting for your help.
