Will this computer I bought be fully linux compatible?
Hi,
Im semi-new to using linux, and run Fedora Core 1 on a Toshiba laptop right now. However I recently purchased a new computer and was wondering what would and what would not be compatible with Fedora Core 2 on it. So my question is: Of these components what wont run in FC2? Im mainly concerned with my video card and sound card ( i know the Pheobe Micro 56k modem is a winmodem (im willing to accept that casualty).
There is a good chance that the modem won't work at all, and the sata might need a kernel recompile. You will have to install the drivers for the GPU but that is a simple task.
You will not the get the full function of your ATI card. Be patient installing ATI drivers.
If you do not mind me critique your system, Prescott core is much slower than Northwood core. I think you wasted your money on the Prescott core. I do not know if you care for sound quality, the Audigy 2 maybe ok for gamers, but the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz gives out much better sound quality than any Creative Lab sound card. There is no EAX support in LINUX. You may have some trouble installing LINUX on a SATA hard drive. I would have used Western Digital Raptor hard drives. They are very, very fast. I would have gone with a floppy disk drive from TEAC because they have never gave me any problems or corrupt any floppies that other brands such as Sony, Panasonc, and Mitsumi did. Usually video cards with a lot of memory like 256 MB does not have fast memory chips, so you thinking of overclocking the card to get near 9800 speeds it will be hard to do it.
Re: Will this computer I bought be fully linux compatible?
You will be able to run it fine, your modem might, but your network card will so you can use broadband. ATI drivers have never reallly been good in linux, but they will soon, so wait a while.
p.s. You have the exact same hard drive i have :0
