Will this broadband modem work?
 

Hi

I've been thinking of getting broadband, and I saw this deal.

Is the modem included compatible with Linux?
I know hardly anything about broadband, so does this package include everything I need to get it installed?

I'm using Mandrake 10.0, with kernel 2.6.

i'm not sure about the usb interfaces, but they both have ethernet interfaces, so you should be fine... of course it would still be a good idea to get some more feedback on this thread before making the decision...

also, i saw on the billion.com website that they provide linux drivers for some stuff, so at least you know they "know linux exists", hehe:

The modem that I wanted to get is the free one :D

yup, the free one (711C2) has ethernet port...

So, how does the ethernet port work? Where does it plug in to?
(eh.. remember, knows little about broadband and networking :D)

it plugs right into your network card... Cat5 Ethernet cable is the most common type of network cable around... basically you just need an ethernet "patch cord"... it's an ethernet cable with a male connector on each end... one end goes into your network card, the other into the dsl modem...

I dont have a network card, but I think I may have an ethernet port next to my usb ports.

Is there any software I can use to check for ethernet ports on my PC?

just look for a port that looks like this:

if you post the output of lsmod i can try to see if you currently have a network interface driver loaded... if you post the output of lspci i can try to see if your linux sees the chip for your network interface...


BTW, an ethernet port basically looks like a big phone line port...

My advice: do not go near the USB option, but broadband modems with an ethernet connection are a breeze to set up: Search these forums.

i have with me the same make (BILLION 7000 ) DSL modem with the USB interface and iam having problems confuguring it , the manual doesnt help much either , iam not sure if my linux detects it in the first place , could any 1 help me with this problem
