will new video card make noticeable diff?
Hi,
I'm running Fedora Core 12 and XFCE on a Pentium 4 with 2 Gb of RAM. It is useable, but not fast. The video is some crumy on-board stuff in an old IBM Netvista pc. I wonder if adding a nicer nVidia based accelerator will make a noticeable different in performance. Anyone have any idea? Thanks much |
Why not look into a single-board solution with embedded nvidia video instead. You can get some serious power for not much money just by replacing your motherboard. This assumes your power supply can handle it, of course.

If the motherboard has an AGP socket,
just plug in any nvidia. I use the old FX 5200 for my P4 computers. Works perfect with any Linux. .... |
Fast at what ? It probably will make no difference in startup time of applications or running programs. If you upgrade your video card you can run games at higher quality and FPS, and run videos of higher resolution (HD in case you can't run them at the moment).

Sure the on-board will not be a good as separate GPU board but the system would be better than the current MB. If you desire to keep the current MB then I would be sure to tweak the system. Get the most out of the 'X' by tweaking the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' if your using 86. If you do replace the on-board with another adapter then you will still need to tweak the configuration. :hattip: |
