I've done a zillion things to get the scanner recognized in Linux (Debian, Mepis, Ubuntu, etc.) SANE just does not see it, yet it is supposed to be supported.
Printer works. No way can I get Kooka or Xsane to see the device. HP Toolkit says "unsupported" but it prints fine. I've checked sane's dll.conf and it is good. user/groups looks good. I can't figure it out. I think it's a broken unit.
Anyone had any success with this unit before I take it back to the store?
Yes but is your Printer one of the Photosmart C3100 series?
If so scanning is supported if you use the HPLIP Driver.
From this URL
Printer is a C3180 so I think that makes it part of the 3100 series, right? I'm on your side in this. But no matter what I do, this dog won't hunt. I've tried this on Kanotix, Mepis, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Freespire live CDs. I've made sure hplip was loaded and so on (I'm not a newbie with Linux.) It just don't go... except back to the store.
Yes you do... and you live to fight another day.... and compared to the my Mac Linux is an eternal struggle in getting new(er) hardware to run. Some days you get the bear... and some days the bear gets you! (One of my favorite lines from Startrek NG... said by Riker to Picard)
