wifi w/ compaq w200 wireless card and xubuntu 7.10

hey everybody,

recently got third-handed down an old compaq laptop (evo n400c) w/ windoze xp, so obviously the first thing i did was nuke the s.o.b. and throw linux on it. i chose xubuntu gutsy 7.10, my first time messing around with any version of ubuntu. the laptop has a proprietary wlan card (compaq w200), but it works with M$ not linux. ive been traversing the interwebs and have found similar projects where people have gotten linux onto an evo laptop and gotten the wireless working, but i havent found anything recent (within 2 years) and obviously havent found anything for gutsy.

ive tried using the orinoco patch thats been circulating around the net, but i get a "wireless extensions not enabled" error. this makes me feel slightly retarded, as it should be something simple to enable them (i would think).

if someone has an idea, or at least get me pointed toward the right path, i would greatly appreciate it.

it uses the orinono usb chipset as far as i can tell. it was proprietary for compaq evo notebooks.

From the looks you will need ndiswrapper since I have not really found info on orinoco supporting USB interface yet. There is a thing called Coxxent that may work though.
