Why won't my webcam work?

I've been trying to setup my Sony Eyetoy as a webcam on my system for a while now and I'm facing a problem. (I have Debian 3.1, uname -a gives: 'Linux [hostname] 2.6.8-3-powerpc #1 [date] ppc GNU/Linux'). I installed the ov511-source package over apt, used 'modprobe ov511', installed xawtv, used 'mknod' to create /dev/video0, but after doing all of this, I can't use the cam. When running 'xawtv -c /dev/video0', I get:

Code:
This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/ppc (2.6.8-3-powerpc)
can't open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
no video grabber device available
I tryed compiling bttv, but there seemed to be an error on every line when I ran 'make KDIR=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.8-3'. I think this may be the problem. I do have the kernel source andd headers installed.

I have no idea how to fix this, any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

Hello and welcome to LQ, hope you like it here.

there seemed to be an error on every line when I ran 'make
In these fora talking about errors more often than not will do you no good. Posting (exact) error messages may help. If you want to gather all output for your make line to a file run it like this: "make KDIR=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.8-3 2>&1 > /tmp/make.log" and if you only want errors: "make KDIR=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.8-3 2> /tmp/make.log".

Error

Hi, I deliberately missed out the error message because it was so long. Basically, it said there were so many errors in the kernel source, at least one per line. This is probably my fault for doing something wrong somewhere.

Do you have camera driver installed?

I know there is UVCVideo driver for some cameras. You can check by your Windows system to see your camera is UVC compatible.

Good luck!
