Question Why my pc gets hang after inserting media in DVD drive.

I am a new user and i am using mandriva 2006 free edition. I got Soni DVD writer. Whenever i insert any type of media including installation cd/dvd (for read or write purpose) my pc get's hang and to bring it out of that i have to restart pc. I don't have this problem with CD writer. Can any one have solution on this problem ?

Reason behind choosing Mandriva 2006 is that this is the only linux which has all drivers for my hardware. I am having intel 101 ggc mainbord with intel 3.06 ghz cpu. 512 MB ram Nvdi 6200 turbo cache graphics card.

If this problem is not solvable then tell me that is there is any other linux which supports my configuration.

I would imagine you have an automounter issue. If you insert the disk outside of X, or outside of KDE / Gnome (maybe try a simpler window manager) do you have the same problems?

Thumbs down Trick Dosen't work.

Hi Thank's for your reply. But the solution you have given dose not worked at all. i have triyed one more thing. by inserting media in boot time. but due to that my linux got hanged at boot time only.
it dose not works..

Do you have any other suggestions. Or please tell me that which is the best linux for my hardware configuration.

My H/W Configuration are
1) intel 3.06 Processor
2) intel D101 ggc Mainbord
3) 512 Ram
4) Sony DVD Writer
5) LG CD Rom

There may be a hardware issue with the drive itself, if it hangs when trying to boot from it. You could try reseating the IDE cables, checking to make sure it's set to master or slave as appropriate, put it as the secondary master by itself (unplug the LG drive just to test), replace the IDE cables (swap with the primary cable), etc. If none of that works I'd say the drive has failed.

As for you HW configuration, pretty much any distribution can be made to support it, but each takes different amounts and types of tinkering. Mandriva might support everything "straight out of the box", but that doesn't necessarily make it the best distribution for you. I've heard excellent things said about Knoppix as far as H/W support.

Hey Thank's for the replay. But this trick also not working. I have called my hardware vender to check the DVD drive. he checked it in front of me. it's working fine under microsoft windows. but when we checked it on linux same problem again.

Ok, I thought you had mentioned that the computer hung with a boot disk. Have you tried a live CD distribution like knoppix? It may be Mandriva itself that's giving the problem.

Potential Solutions
1 Try a different distribution
2 Search mandriva forums for similar problems no doubt many people are having similar problems
3 disable any automounter or dvd/cd related services (processes)
best of luck!

Sorry for doing a double post but I just replied to 7 posts most of them are related to intel mainboards (I am not blaming intel, nessesaraly) (bleeding edge) The drivers maybe the problem!!! I am not sure that you mainboard is bleeding edge.

Lightbulb Linux support for Dvd Drivers

There is no problem with my main board. all other function except the dvd drive is fine (excellent) in Linux. in windows the dvd drive is also working fine. did you get my problem. it's about the dvd drive. i think that the linux which is i am using might be not having proper driver for my dvd drive this thinking is due to above discussion with all you people. can any one tell me which is the best driver for sony dvd writer.

Do you know if your drives are using SCSI emulation, or the new ATAPI interface? You could try the opposite of whichever is currently being used.
Code:
dmesg | grep cd
should tell you, but it might take some work with Mandriva. Knoppix is a Debian based distribution, so you might want to try installing Debian or Ubuntu.
