yes i have installed linux mandriva 2006 free on my compaq deskpro machine which has onboard sound built into the mother. now for some reasson when i type in this command "kdesu draksound" it says that no sound card has been detected?
do i have to configure somthing if so please tell me?
I don't know if you have installed the ALSA-modules in your distro. I don't know about Mandriva, but in SuSe 10.0 I have.
With the command 'alsaconf', my soundcard(s) are detected and configured in a very simple way. Maybe you can try....
Even though all alsa files in the Mandriva 2006 "free" installation are installed, Mandriva does not recognise the command alsaconf. One reason why I abandoned Mandriva 2006.
I am reconsidering my position because of SuSE 10 problems. I've now run an alsa-based driver installer in Mandriva 2006 (I got the link from the motherboard manufacturer) and Mandriva now recognises and runs alsaconf. Theoretically, the alsa driver for the soundcard is now installed. Unfortunately, still no sound.

Rep:
to to run "alsamixer" or a mixer program and unmute the card. (that is, if everything is working correctally). By Default, the drivers are set up to be muted... however thats when configuring with Gentoo Linux, yoru distro could be different.
Thanks for that. I ran alsamixer when sound did not work and all features (except microphone, which I don't have) were unmuted. I've got SuSE 10 and Mandriva 2006 installed (both on probation for a variety of reasons) on this machine and cannot get a peep out of the sound system with either. I got sound working in SuSE twice but only temporarily and it will not oblige me with an encore. I wish developers would spend some time on getting their distros right instead of issuing newer, wronger versions.
