Why doesn't my USB external modem work?

I just got an external modem, as advised by other members, with the thought that is would actually work because it doesn't require any driver installation. It didn't work. The modem doesnt even get picked up when kudzu runs. Either its just a pieceof crap or I dont know how to install a modem in linux, I do know that it at least works because I installed it in windows. Someone needs to give me a newb proof walk through to installing a modem in linux. It's a USB external modem I bought for $15 online.

Kudzu could have detected it .
You never know when you connect certain USB devices.

Try this
Open your /etc/sysconfig/hwconf [Hope your distro is redhat <=9 ]

See for all entries with USB bus.
See if your modem has got detected.

If its there well and good . GO for modem configuration

Also you can try lsusb , usbview for more info

Cheers

Actually, I would think the external modem suggestion was with a serial port not a USB port.

Just as a side comment, it is always useful to indicate the manufacturer and model number rather than just a generic description -- J.W.

My USB ADSL modem is Aztech DSL 206U and I wonder if it works. Some say yes, some no.
