Why doesn't anyone want to buy my Linux Computer?
 

I posted a used Gateway computer with a Pentium II processor at 233MHZ to my local Craigslist. [link removed]

It has 128MB Ram and a 13GB Hard Drive. The computer has a CD and floppy disk drive. The price is $40 for the computer only, $50 for the computer with a keyboard and mouse, and $60 for the computer, keyboard, mouse, and 15" monitor.

I have had this up for almost a week now, and I have not gotten a single email except one from a guy who is willing to supply me with more computers.

It has Damn Small Linux on it, and I explained on the page how easy to use it is.

I would put it on eBay, but it would be a beast to ship.

Why do you think that nobody is interested in it?

I guess that people may be scared of Linux, but I try to qualm their fears in my posting by offering to let them try it themselves.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Yes, I had a similar experience. My PIII computer with Red Hat 8.0 on it would not sell for even 20$. :-(

Sad but true, people have been used to Windows too much that they are ready to face severe crashes but not linux.

The problem isn't Linux. Try putting Windows 98 on it, and see if you get any more offers. A computer that old is only good for giving away. Find a friend who doesn't have a computer, but wants one, and give it to him; or donate it to some worthwhile organization ... if it works

The irony is that you can't sell it legally if it has windows on it.

Even if it is the only computer that copy of Windows is installed on? It has a 98 license, although I couldn't imagine anyone using 98 after MS stopped supporting it.

Technically the next owner is supposed to transfer ownership of the license (cost $90 back in the 80's). I doubt if it would be enforced against an individual however. Not worth the trouble. I just thought the irony was humourous.

At work we replaced our Pentium III servers that had NT on them. I didn't want us to get in to trouble. NT has complicated and expensive licensing. So I wiped the drives and then installed Mandrake Linux on them. I was also concerned about any confidential information being removed.

Man, old computers dont tend to sell, just because you can buy a compaq for less then $400 with a LCD monitor, thats why they wont sell...
