Why can't I install my wireless driver?

Hello everyone,

I am fairly new to the Linux environment, please bear with me as I fumble along on my new endeavor. My history with Linux is short and not so sweet. I have been actively learning to use Linux for about 8 months now. I am currently struggling with getting my wireless driver to install so that I can connect to my home wireless network.

The system i am currently using is an Asus U56E laptop.

I have played with this for about 48 hours, looking over every tutorial I can get my hands on. Please help a poor fellow out. i can not make hide nor hair of why i can't get my wireless driver to install, or my wireless card to connect to my wifi.

Thank you,

Chad

which disto are you using? some distros already have wifi drivers installed or you can install driver with jockey on ubuntu.

4 ways to get wifi working on linux

For starters you can't install a .tar.gz with dpkg- dpkg only works on .deb files.

What are the contents of the iwlwifi-6050-ucode-9.201.4.1 directory that you unpacked? Is there a .deb in there, or code to compile?

TobiSGD 04-16-2013 05:11 PM

The distro you use already comes with a driver for that card, as it seems, but you also need firmware for that card. That is what you actually have in form of the .tgz file. Installation instructions can be found in the README file that is part of that archive, but basically it comes down to copying the firmware file (iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode) to /lib/firmware.

@yooy- I am currently playing with Kali Linux.

Thank you for all the help. You are all awesome. I have attached a couple of screenshots to the post now. I can not get my wireless card to connect to my network, and it looks like my /lib/firmware has all the firmware it says I was missing during installation. Attachment 12343

Kali is not a general-purpose Linux aimed at new users. You'd do much better with Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSuse, or Fedora, where the level of support available is much higher.
